Tips & Tricks

Pinhole Press offers a variety of Photo Books that are fully customizable with their easy to use software and pre-made templates designed to let your photos shine!

This post covers both Softcover and the Hardcover books. Board Books are covered in a separate post here.

When deciding which book is best for you here are some things to consider:

Terms to know: Page = 1 side. Spread = 2 pages

  • How many photos you would like to feature:

    • Softcover offers up to 50 pages and four sizes with multiple layouts for photos (you can fit up to about 100 images)

    • Hardcover offers up to 90 pages, four sizes, two paper options and 10 fabric colors (you could fit max. 180 images)

  • Story

    • Pinhole Press has a few pre-templated books (i.e. Wedding Guestbook, All About, Cookbook, Healthy Habits) with suggested content and layouts that are simple to load with your photos to support the story.

    • You can also completely customize your own story (with or without words) by choosing a classic photo book or adjusting any of the pre-templated books to meet your vision.

  • Occassion

    • For wedding albums, annual year books or other heirloom type albums, I suggest choosing the hard cover photo book because it is more durable and substantial. Unless you’re looking to do a simpler year book the Softcover All About book is a fabulous option.

    • For vacations/holidays/anniversaries or simpler story telling styled books, the soft cover photo books are your best option. I am so impressed by the thick rigid pages of the softcover photo book. Watch the videos below to learn more about the differences between the Soft and Hardcover photo book options.

  • Aesthetic

    • The Hardcover books come with linen and photo combination covers. The softcover books are printed on durable photo paper with photos on the covers. If aesthetic matters, this might be a deciding factor for you to choose between the hard and soft cover books.

  • Durability

    • Who will be using this book? If kids will be flipping through these often, I suggest going for a hardcover or board book as your choice. Although, the softcover photo books can shockingly withstand a decent amount of handling from kiddos given the durable photo paper that the pages are printed on!

  • Time to create

    • Both photo books take the same amount of time to make.

  • Budget

    • Hardcover = more expensive. Starting as low as $49.99. Soft cover books start as low as $14.99 depending on the size and length of book you create.
